CS Discoveries Week 4, 09-18-2026, Lesson 11: CSS Classes

  1. Objective:
    1. Students will add classes to their websites to better customize their CSS code.
  2. 11:50-12:00: Start of Class
    1. Warm-Up:
      1. Begin by taking this quiz on the vocabulary from lessons 1-8.
        1. You can edit answers, so check and see if you get any wrong!
        2. Remember that ALL of my quizzes are open notes!
        3. This will be a 5 point Assessment in Synergy. (Scoring 10/10 will earn 5 points, 9/10 will earn 4.5 points, etc.)
      2. Add the following vocabulary code to your notes:
        • CSS Class - An identifier that allows multiple elements in an HTML document to be styled in the same way
      3. You should have already shared your Google Doc with aaron.smith@pgcps.org so no additional work needs to be done to hand this in.
    2. Warm-Ups are usually a 5 point Independent Work grade if a written response is expected, a 5 point Assessment grade if the Warm-Up is a quiz, or part of a 10 point Notebook Check if they include new vocabulary/code to enter into student notes. They are due at the start of class and not eligible for late submission or re-submission.
  3. 12:00-12:55: Instruction & Student Work
    1. Lesson 11: CSS Classes
      1. This video goes over how to do this.
      2. Grading Rubric:
        • 6 pts: A single HTML file named "index.html," a single CSS file named "style.css," and images intended to be part of the web page have been zipped and uploaded to the proper Exit Ticket.
        • 1 pt: Webpage uses a properly formatted CSS class rule set in style.css.
        • 1 pt: Created CSS class modifies three different tags in the HTML document by selective inclusion of the class="classname" code inside selected HTML tags. (Use the sample website in Code.org as an example.)
        • 1 pt: The three different tags are all part of the same section of the web page.
        • 1 pt: Other sections of the web page are not modified by the CSS class.
        • -10 pts: Any included an image that was not used with permission. (A missing citation = a missing grade.)
    2. Permitted image sources (provided a citation is included):

Exit Tickets handed in on time are eligible for re-submission within 10 calendar days of feedback, with old and new grades averaged. (It is always better to hand in as much as possible on time, even if not complete.) Exit Tickets are due during the last 10 minutes of the last class of the week.
