2nd Grade, Howard, 08-28 – Keyboarding: Tux Typing

Announcements:

  1. The last day for any late work is Friday, October 16th!
    1. All work not completed by then will remain a zero.
    2. Any work assigned after then is due the same day.

Objective:

  1. Students will be able to...
    • Identify the parts of a computer.
    • Understand what makes a computer run.
    • Use a password correctly.
    • Locate the home row on the keyboard.
    • Type selected keys with a minimum number of errors.

1:30-1:40: Start of Class

  1. Students will enter and go to the front of the class, where Mr. Smith will walk them through the assignment for the day.
  2. Students will find their assigned seats and be walked through the process for logging into the computers. (Students who were in Mr. Smith's room last year may remember how to do this, but reminders are good for everyone.)

1:40-2:20: Instruction & Student Work

  1. Students will work on a keyboarding lesson.
    1. Rubric, Objective, Standards, and links can be found here.
    2. Today we will begin by logging into Typing.com through Clever and completing the introductory lessons. (Lessons 1, 2, and 3 will be the only ones unlocked for Mr. Smith's class.)
    3. Students who complete the Typing.com portion will switch to using a program installed on the lab computers called Tux Typing.
    4. Students are being asked to play one of the "games" designed to help them improve touch typing skills.
      1. While modeled as "games," this is not an incentive or reward - typing is the heart of this lesson.
    5. Additional instruction will be given based on student typing aptitude.

2:20-2:30: End of Class

  1. Students will showcase their work to their peers before shutting down their computers and lining up to return to their classroom.

Missed Assignment?

  1. Parents: If you are reading this because your child was absent and they need to make up the work, have them log into Typing.com through Clever and select my (Mr. Smith's) class to complete lessons 1, 2, and 3. They're short, which is why all 3 are assigned.
  2. For piece of mind, it is advised that you message me (Mr. Smith) via ClassDojo to let me know the work is ready to be checked.
  3. Previous Lessons: 08-25 – Graphic Design: Piskel
