2nd Grade, Manning, 05-04 – Code.org Lesson 5: Collecting Treasure with Laurel

  1. Objective:
    1. Students will be able to:
      1. Develop problem solving and critical thinking skills by reviewing debugging practices.
      2. Order movement commands as sequential steps in a program.
      3. Represent an algorithm as a computer program.
  1. Announcements:
    1. The last day for any late work for Q4 is Thursday, June 4th!
      1. This provides 2 weeks at the end of the Quarter for Mr. Smith to grade late work.
  2. Previous Lessons: Lesson 3, Tux Typing 3, Lesson 4, Tux Math, Lesson 5, Tux Typing 4, Lesson 6, Lesson 7, Lesson 8, Lesson 9
  3. Today's Lesson: Code.org Lesson 5: Collecting Treasure with Laurel
    1. Vocabulary:
      1. Algorithm - A list of steps to finish a task.
      2. Bug - Part of a program that does not work correctly.
      3. Debugging - Finding and fixing problems in an algorithm or program.
      4. Persistence - Not giving up.
      5. Program - An algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine.
      6. Programming - The art of creating a program.
      7. Sequencing - Putting commands in correct order so computers can read the commands.
    2. We will begin by using Clever to log into Code.org.
      1. Only Code.org logins done through Clever will show the work that has been assigned.
    3. Students are responsible for EVERY lesson they can see in Course B, though if they are caught up only Lesson 5 will have work to complete.
      • Level 1 is a video that we will watch together in class.
      • Levels 2-7 are for skill building. Don't skip levels, each reinforces what came before!
      • Level 8 is a Challenge Level and is extra credit.
      • Levels 9-11 are Practice Levels to review what was learned so far.
      • Level 12 is a Prediction Level where students look at code and guess what it will do.
      • Level 13 is an additional Practice Level.
    4. Grading Rubric:
      1. Students earn 1 point for each level turned BRIGHT GREEN by completing it.
      2. Pale green Levels are incomplete and therefore not counted.
      3. CHALLENGE Levels are counted as Extra Credit.
      4. FREE PLAY Levels are rewards for completing the work and are not graded.
    5. This is an IN-CLASS assignment, NOT HOMEWORK. While late work will be accepted up until June 4th, it WILL be late!
