  • Objective:
    1. Students will gain familiarity with some of the more common expectations of the Media Arts program to better facilitate their success in the 2025-2026 School Year.
  • 11:50-12:00: Start of Class
    1. Warm-Up: Find your assigned seat and log into the desktop computer.
      1. Mr. Smith can manage password concerns. DO NOT share passwords with other students!
    2. Warm-Ups are usually a 5 point Independent Work grade if a written response is expected, or a 5 point Assessment grade if the Warm-Up is a quiz. They are due at the start of class and not eligible for late submission or re-submission.
    3. Announcements:
      1. Computer Buying Guide | Camera Buying Guide | Project Suggestions | "Portable" Software
  • 12:00-12:55: Instruction & Student Work
    1. As the first day of class, we're primarily going over norms and expectations.
      1. SGM Pre-Test
        1. Answer as best you can, but this is so Mr. Smith knows what knowledge needs reinforcement. You will earn credit for completion.
      2.  Course Syllabus
        1. There's a lot in here, but as it's all 3 MS classes combined not all of it applies to Media Arts Majors.
      3. Supplies:
        1. ALL Media Arts Majors are expected to have the following items every day (Checking and providing a grade for their presence will be AT LEAST done weekly.):
          1. Media Arts Notebook (1st one provided by Mr. Smith)
          2. 32GB OR LARGER Flash Drive (A.K.A. Thumb Drive)
        2. While not required, Media Arts Majors can benefit from the following items:
          1. A non-Chromebook computer (for use at home)
          2. A camera (not a phone) capable of recording still images, video, and audio (for use at home)
          3. A blank, black t-shirt (for our t-shirt printing incentive days and any time we record a production)
      4. Graded Work:
        1. Warm-Ups: These will usually either be vocabulary to write down in your notes or a quiz on said vocabulary. They are due during the 1st 10 minutes of class, do not delay in your arrival.
          1. All quizzes are open notes and graded as Assessments.
          2. Notes are checked once a week as Independent Work.
        2. Classwork: Assigned classwork will almost always be a project that takes multiple days to complete. Single day "mini-projects" are assigned at the start of the year and occasionally near the end of a Quarter.
          1. Mini-projects are due on the day they're assigned.
          2. Multi-day projects are handed in as weekly Exit Tickets. Odd-numbered Exit Tickets (Week 1, Week 3, etc.) are IN PROGRESS and not expected to be complete. Even numbered Exit Tickets are expected to be completed work.
          3. No projects are available for late submission. Hand in what you have when it's due or it's a zero. Unfinished work is still more than a zero.
          4. Most projects are eligible for re-submission if handed in within 10 days of feedback from the first attempt, PROVIDED the first attempt was handed in on time. (You can't re-submit something if you never handed it in to begin with.)
      5. Upcoming Events:
        1. T-Shirt Printing Day (End of each month, starting in September)
        2. Create & Collaborate Conference (Nov 17*)
        3. Amplify Awards Due (Feb 17)
        4. PGCPS Film Festival Due (Mar 10)

    5. Projects are eligible for re-submission, but only once. They must be resubmitted using the same form as before, and no later than 10 days after feedback has been shared with them in Canvas. The 4th project of each Quarter is not eligible for re-submission due to its proximity to the end of the Quarter!
    6. Deadlines for future projects are not adjusted. Students are encouraged to not put off starting Project 4 because they've decided to work on redoing Project 3 from scratch.
  • 12:55-1:05: End of Class
    1. Save all work on your flash drive and back it up in Google Drive, as "I couldn't access my project" will not be seen as a valid excuse.
    2. If it's the last B Day of the week, submit the week's Classwork as an Exit Ticket, then check to make sure you uploaded the correct thing.
      1. Odd Numbered Exit Ticket Rubric:
4 pts Student has shared their plan for their current project.
3 pts It is clear which project has been selected.
3 pts It is clear that the student is following the rubric for their chosen project, even if they have not yet met all of the criteria.
      2. Even numbered Exit Ticket Rubrics will vary, and are included with the project information.
      3. NOTE: Links that do not show any content and files that cannot be opened do not count towards the completion of this assignment. Sharing the work with the rest of the class is ESSENTIAL for getting a grade above a zero.
      4. Feedback from the critiques is provided in the Canvas assignment for that project.
    3. Properly shut down your assigned computer and line up, prepared to go to lunch.
