CS Discoveries, 12-18-2025, Lesson 13: Flexbox Children for More Control

THIS VIDEO REVIEWS THE MOST IMPORTANT CONTENT COVERED IN CLASS TODAY! (It was made for my Q1 class, but the content is the same.)

  1. Objective:
    • Students will learn how to use the div tag with CSS to make their website appear however they want.
  2. Warm-Up:
      1. Add a link to this Flexbox cheat sheet into your notes, or copy/paste the contents.
        1. U2L13 Flexbox Children Cheat Sheet Handout
    1. Warm-Ups are usually a 5 point Independent Work grade if a written response is expected, or a 5 point Assessment grade if the Warm-Up is a quiz. They are due at the start of class and not eligible for late submission or re-submission.
  3. Computer Setup
    1. There is a lot of useful software on the lab computers, but today we will only be covering the most relevant ones for this class.
      1. Firefox
      2. VS Codium
      3. Code.org
  4. Deadlines: (Content is subject to change due to various factors including All-Major days and inclement weather days.)
    1. Warm-Ups: Due daily
  • Week 7 Assignments Due 12-18 (2 days)
    1. Lesson 12: Organizing Content with Flexbox
    2. Lesson 13: Flexbox Children for More Control
      1. Today's work will be done in Code.org, as it involves a lot of practice. There will be no need to add a screenshot.
      2. The rubric below is based on the one in Lesson 13 Levels 7 and 8, but is modified to fit the class grading structure.
      3. The practice is useful, but the work graded will be Level 7.
      4. Grading Rubric
        • 4 pts: Added an `order` property to child paragraphs and images to match the layout of the image in the instructions.
        • 3 pts: Added an `align-self` property to paragraphs to match the image in the instructions.
        • 3 pt: Added a `flex-grow` property to paragraph(s) to match the image in the instructions.

    1. End of Course Survey
  • Exit Tickets
    1. Exit Tickets "go live" during the last 10 minutes of our last class of the week, except when we only meet once during that week, it's the last week of the Quarter, or Mr. Smith screwed up.
    2. Scroll up for the information for this week to see the link to the Exit Ticket.
    3. 4 pts Proofread your work.
3 pts What did you accomplish in CS Discoveries this week?
3 pts What did you learn in CS Discoveries this week?
    4. NOTE: If you do not describe WHAT you did, saying you worked on it is not enough information to earn credit.
      1. Bad Example: "I completed Unit 2 Lesson 1" says nothing about what you did or learned. Describe what you did and what you learned as if to someone who does not have access to the course materials.
    5. Exit Tickets are always 10 point Classwork grades and not eligible for late submission or re-submission. They are due during the last 10 minutes of the last class of the week.
