      1. October Theme: Shadows & Silhouettes
        1. This October, we invite you to explore the dramatic interplay of light and darkness. Shadows and silhouettes strip away detail and color, leaving the viewer with pure form, contrast, and mystery. Your challenge is to use light (or lack of it) to create storytelling through shapes, lines, and contrast. Remember students can enter on the form anytime, it needs to be submitted by the 15th to be eligible for prizes.
      2. Tips to Try This Month
        • Place the light source behind your subject — you want backlighting, not front lighting.
        • Meter for the background (bright sky, window, etc.), not the subject, so your subject will render dark.
        • Look for subjects with clear, recognizable outlines (people, trees, structures, animals)
        • Use manual exposure (or spot metering) when possible to control brightness/darkness
        • Simplify the scene: avoid clutter that interferes with the silhouette
        • For shadows (not just silhouettes), let shadow itself be the star — use long, dramatic forms

  • Feedback from the critiques is provided in the Canvas assignment for that project.
  • Projects are eligible for re-submission, but only once. They must be resubmitted using the same form as before, and no later than 10 days after feedback has been shared with them in Canvas. The 4th project of each Quarter is not eligible for re-submission due to its proximity to the end of the Quarter!
