Animation Projects

Project - Animated Conversation

This project may be completed by the following students:

M1 1st Year Media Arts Majors.

M2 2nd Year Media Arts Majors.

M3 3rd Year Media Arts Majors.

Directions

  1. Pre-Production

    1. It is advised that you complete the Key Frames project first, as that will help you develop skills that are needed for this assignment.
    2. Find two characters on openclipart.org or a similar, royalty-free website that you can use for this assignment. (Alternatively: Design your own characters on a website like Photopea or Method Draw.
    3. Now that you are familiar with key frames and have your character designs ready to go, storyboard out a story using those characters that can be told in a time frame between 50-60 seconds, TRT.
      1. Remember that the goal here is to show you can animate both characters talking, so be sure to give meaningful dialogue to both characters.
      2. There is no official requirement for what the plot of your animation needs to be, so long as your Media Arts teacher approves it. Suggestions for possible stories include but are not limited to...
        1. An attempt to trade food during lunch.
        2. One student explaining science homework to another student.
        3. A child asking a parent for that new video game that just came out.
        4. A character accepting an important award for their hard work.
    4. Get your storyboard approved by the Media Arts teacher. They may have advice to make the recording process easier.
  2. Production

    1. Create any of the photos or drawings that you intend to animate. The majority of this project will be done in post-production.
    2. Record all of your voice over work.
      1. It is MUCH easier to sync animation up with recorded audio than it is to sync audio up with a created animation.
  3. Post-Production

    1. Use an image editor like Photopea to optimize your characters for animation. There should be a base image for each character with their mouth open as well as an image that will be used to cover their open mouth.
    2. Import your created or sourced (with citations!) art into a video editor. (This lesson was created with WeVideo in mind, but any editor that uses key frames can work.
    3. Use your storyboard as a guide to animate your story with key frames.
    4. Be sure to use credits at the end of your video to give thanks to anyone who helps you create it.
      1. This includes YOU! YOUR NAME should be in the credits!
    5. Export your completed video and upload it with a copy of your approved storyboard.
