Animation Projects

Project - Key Frames

This project may be completed by the following students:

M1 1st Year Media Arts Majors.

M2 2nd Year Media Arts Majors.

M3 3rd Year Media Arts Majors.

Directions

  1. Pre-Production

    1. If you are not already familiar with the Key Frames feature in WeVideo, watch this video to get the gist of it. (It's only 4 minutes long - 2 minutes if you speed it up.)
    2. Now that you are familiar with how key frames work in WeVideo and similar editors, storyboard out a story that can be told in a time frame between 50-60 seconds, TRT.
      1. Storyboards can be a variety of formats. You can make your own or find a template online. You can even make one by folding a single sheet of paper 4 times!
      2. The goal of this project is key frame animation. You can animate with photos, images from openclipart.org (or similar sources), or, ideally, create your own original scenes and characters.
      3. There is no official requirement for what the plot of your animation needs to be, so long as your Media Arts teacher approves it. Suggestions for possible stories include but are not limited to...
        1. Spaceship launching and navigating an asteroid field.
        2. A (fake) video game with the character defeating several opponents and/or solving a puzzle.
        3. A ship arriving at an island to save someone who had been stranded.
        4. Several smaller robots combining to form a larger robot.
        5. A cat knocking everything off of a counter top before taking a nap.
    3. Get your storyboard approved by the Media Arts teacher. They may have advice to make the recording process easier.
  2. Production

    1. Create any of the photos or drawings that you intend to animate. The majority of this project will be done in post-production.
    2. If your video has voice-over work, this is also where you will be recording it.
      1. It is MUCH easier to sync animation up with recorded audio than it is to sync audio up with a created animation.
  3. Post-Production

    1. Import your created or sourced (with citations!) art into a video editor.
    2. Use your storyboard as a guide to animate your story with key frames.
    3. Be sure to use credits at the end of your video to give thanks to anyone who helps you create it.
      1. This includes YOU! YOUR NAME should be in the credits!
    4. Export your completed video and upload it with a copy of your approved storyboard.
