This space will be used to provide announcements, lessons, and other resources.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Today's Lesson\n<ol>\n<li>Audio 1: Haiku\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 98.3594%;\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 5.44473%;\">4 Points<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 94.5049%;\">Stories have very few spelling and\/or grammatical errors. Proofread!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 5.44473%;\">3 Points<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 94.5049%;\">Stories are 3 sentences each, with 1 sentence for the beginning, 1 for the middle, and 1 for the end.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 5.44473%;\">3 Points<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 94.5049%;\">Haiku (mostly) retells the first story but in the form of a haiku.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #fbeeb8;\">To begin, we need a story.<\/span>Possible story hooks:\n<ul>\n<li>What did you do during vacation?<\/li>\n<li>A comet is heading towards Earth! What does the superhero do to stop it?<\/li>\n<li>The athlete works to win a sporting event!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You<span style=\"background-color: #fbeeb8;\"> aren't limited to just these 3 hooks<\/span>, but consider them <span style=\"background-color: #fbeeb8;\">if you're having trouble<\/span> thinking of a starting point.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">Next, we'll need to plan the beginning, middle and end of your story. To make this more challenging, you will need to write your story with only 3 sentences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With only 3 sentences to tell the whole story, you'll have to be very concise with your details.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">Click <\/span>the \"Reply\" button below to open up the <span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">text box<\/span> for you to write.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">The first sentence should be the beginning of the story.<\/span> Does it mention the main character? Does it mention the event taking place? It should do at least one or the other.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">The last sentence (Yes, we're skipping to the end.) should reveal how everything works out.<\/span> How did the athlete win? How did the superhero stop the comet?<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">The middle sentence should be your bridge from the first sentence to the last.<\/span> What happened in-between those events?<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #bfedd2;\">Proofread <\/span>your sentences and press the button to hand them in. Once you've done that, you will be able to see what other student's have written.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">Time to make this a bit more challenging and turn your story into a Haiku!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Haiku are one of my favorite forms of poetry.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You <span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">don't <\/span>need to rhyme!<\/li>\n<li>The first and third lines <span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">need to be 5 syllables.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The 2nd line <span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">needs to be 7 syllables.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 6th Grade Language Arts teacher once showed me that if you're having trouble counting syllables you can <span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">put your hand just under your chin<\/span>. When you read a word out loud, <span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">each time your chin hits your hand counts as a single syllable<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Look over the 3 sentences you wrote for your story. Do they have too many syllables? Not enough? Both are possible.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pgcps.instructure.com\/courses\/728738\/discussion_topics\/2269005\"><span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">Click the \"Reply\" button for this assignment in Canvas to your own story<\/span><\/a>, then <span style=\"background-color: #eccafa;\">rewrite it to make sure it's a Haiku<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>It's possible that your haiku story might not be the same as your original story. That's OK! Books are never fully the same as the movies that are made from them.\n<ol>\n<li>You might need to leave something out!<\/li>\n<li>You might need to add something!<\/li>\n<li>You might need to change a detail!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Proofread your haiku (Count the syllables! 5-7-5!) and press the button to hand it in.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to your first Media Arts class of the year!
