Middle School Back To School Night, 9-13-2017

Here is this evening's Media Arts Handout:

  • Film Festival: January 24th
    • 6:30 pm
    • This is the Midterm.
  • Grades:
    • 70% Classwork (Warm-Ups, Projects, etc.)
    • 20% Assessments (Projects that assess skills learned from previous assignments)
    • 10% Homework (1 edited video per week, due Friday*)
    • If it is not in Google Classroom, it will not be graded.
  • Resubmission policy
    • Late work = 0 without excused absence
    • Work handed in on time that IS NOT AN A = 1 week to fix for higher grade
      • Homework & Warm-Ups are ineligible for resubmission.
      • Work with little to no effort is ineligible for resubmission.
        • Blank Google Doc when assignment asked for edited video
        • Student pressed "Mark as Done" button but uploaded nothing
        • Student missed every listed requirement
        • Works that show effort but contain a non-negotiable ARE eligible for resubmission.

  • Suggested Hardware
    • Camera capable of video & still images
      • Phones work.
      • Cannon Vixia series is an incredible video camera for a good price. (Mine cost $250 at Best Buy.)
    • Computer
      • NOT a Chromebook (Chromebooks are fantastic but not for editing video).
      • MacOS or Windows
      • AMD processors > Intel processors
      • Dedicated graphics card (If it gives a brand for the graphics card that isn't "Intel," it's a dedicated card.)
      • Desktops = more power for price, but less portability
      • Notebooks (Laptops) = Students may bring them to school and connect to the wi-fi, but AT THEIR OWN RISK.
      • $700-$1,000 is a price range that will last 3+ years or more.
        • Clearance & Christmas sales are awesome.
    • Microphone
      • USB mics work great for computers.
        • $20-40 is a good price for headsets.
      • Mics with 1/8" headphone jacks are compatible with phones.
        • Lapel mics are as little as $6.29 on Amazon.
  • Suggested Software
    • Hitfilm Express
      • FREE
      • Nonlinear Video Editor comparable to Final Cut ($300) and Adobe Premiere ($20/month with Creative Cloud)
      • Feature Rich (Chroma Key, transitions, animation, multiple video/audio tracks, etc.)
      • Tutorials can be found here.
    • Handbrake
      • FREE
      • Can convert iPhone videos (.mov) into videos that HitFilm can edit (.mp4).
      • Only needed if editing iPhone videos using HitFilm.
    • Audacity
      • FREE
      • Audio Editor
      • Requires additional download to export MP3 files.
    • Inkscape
      • FREE
      • Vector Graphics Editor comparable to Adobe Illustrator ($20/month with Creative Cloud).
    • GIMP
      • FREE
      • Photo Editor comparable to Adobe Photoshop  ($20/month with Creative Cloud).
    • Open Broadcaster
      • FREE
      • Screen & webcam recording software similar to toned down Tricaster ($20,000).
