This project may be completed by the following students:
1st Year Media Arts Majors.
Technology Concepts Students.
Directions
Pre-Production
Make a list of 10 events to which you feel most students would relate.
Write out text that relates to at least 5 of these events as if it was the caption in a meme.
Example: "When the teacher lets you use your phone in class."
Example: "When the test is rescheduled for next week."
WARNING: In the past, students have spent significant time "researching" memes without actually working on this project. Your meme should be original. Therefore, you do not need to spend 30 minutes browsing Google Images "for ideas."
This will be considered off task behavior.
Get your meme text approved by the Media Arts teacher. They may have advice to make the production and post-production processes easier.
Select a pose, setting, and (recommended) an outfit for your photo.
Remember, the photo should do its best to relate to and support the text you have selected. This is MORE than a selfie, it's a selfie with purpose.
If you can't locate or create a setting that best supports your text, select a setting where you will have a solid-color background to put more emphasis on your outfit and pose.
Production
Have a classmate take your photo in your selected setting.
It's best to have 4-5 photos taken with slight variations, to allow you to pick the best one. It is likely that not all photos will turn out the way you want.
Post-Production
Review your photos and select the one that you feel best fits the requirements listed in the rubric.
Open your selected photo in an image editor.
While not required, PhotoPea is free, web based, and not currently blocked by PGCPS.
Other editors may be used so long as they support cropping, formatting text, and exporting as a .png or .jpg file.
Crop your photo to be square, making sure to include as much of your pose and relevant background as possible.
In PhotoPea, go to "Image," then "Canvas Size."
Make sure the chain icon is NOT selected.
Look at the numbers for the height and width. Change the larger number to be the same as the smaller number.
The grid underneath is to select what part of the image you're keeping. Leaving it as is will keep whatever's in the center.
Add your text, making sure to PROOFREAD.
A typo in a long report is embarrassing. A typo in an image with less than 10 words shows no attention to detail.
Format your text so that it stands out against whatever parts of the image are behind it.
There's more than one way to do this.
Make your text be a contrasting color. (Less effective against "busy" images with a variety of colors and values.)
Put a contrasting border around your text. (Stroke, highlight, and other methods can all work.)
Export your completed image and upload it for a grade.
Rubric
25% Brainstormed list of possible text for the meme is included with the project.
25% Meme's image includes a photo of the student that relates directly to the chosen text. The background either supports the text or is designed to not distract from the text or the student.
25% Text is superimposed on the image and is easy to read.
25% Image is square and saved as a .png or .jpg file.
