Directions
Pre-Production
Overview: The client is going to be managing the social media accounts for your school. They are commissioning you to make an original logo that can be used on social media accounts as well as posters and T-shirts. To this end the best format choice would be a scalable vector graphic, or SVG file.
Visit OpenClipArt.org and look for images that relate to our school mascot.
Create 5-10 rough sketches for how the images and text could be arranged to make a nice looking logo.
Show the sketches to others to get their feedback before selecting the design you intend to create digitally.
Production
Use a program or website like Method Draw or Vectr to recreate your best logo design.
One trick for making this easier is to take a top-down photo of your sketch, import it into your editor, then use the tools in the editor to copy it as best you can. Once that's done, delete the original photo.
Remember, you are limited to TWO colors!
Lighter and darker versions of a color in this case will ALSO count as separate colors. If it's being printed and we have to mix a new batch of ink for that spot, it's a different color.
If you add a gradient, you just added thousands of colors and have far exceeded your limit.
If you leave the background in Method Draw its original color, it will be transparent and not count towards your total. If you change the background to any other color, it will count.
Post-Production
Not everything that can view SVG files will open them the same way, so you will need to save your SVG file to show you did the work but also export a PNG file to show what you wanted it to look like.
To save an SVG file in Method Draw, click on File, then click on Save Image.
To export a PNG file in Method Draw, click on File, then click on Export as PNG.
Upload your SVG & PNG files, as well as a photo of your thumbnail sketches, so they can be critiqued and graded.
Rubric
25% Logo must consist of only the school's colors. (Black and white both count as colors for this project. You should only include either of those if they're your school colors.)
25% Logo background must be transparent.
25% Logo graphic should relate in some way to the school mascot. (A bear mascot could be a full bear, a bear head, a bear paw, a bear paw print, etc.) (Openclipart.org is a good place to find svg images that can be modified for this lesson, with MODIFIED being the key word. Also: CITE YOUR SOURCES!)
25% Logo must be saved as both an SVG file and a PNG file.
