5th Grade Unit - Video

This project may be completed by the following students:

g5 5th Grade Elementary Media Arts Students.


Note: Animation is one of the categories in the annual PGCPS Student Film Festival! Recordings that are well done may be considered for entry into the contest!

Lessons

  1. Video 1: Animation Script

    1. Objective: Students will create a "punny" script to prepare for their animation project.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Story has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 3 Pts Story has one animal tell an animal themed joke to another animal, and includes the other animal's reaction.
      • 3 Pts Story is appropriate for school.
    3. Today, Mr. Smith is going to show you how WeVideo and other video editors can be used to create an animation.
      • Here's an animatic Mr. Smith made earlier.
      • Think about how simple changes to character placement, tone of voice, character design, and camera directions can change how the audience perceives the character.
      • Use this paper handout to write a short script where Animal A greets Animal B, shares an animal themed joke, and gets a reaction from Animal B.
      • While any school-appropriate animal themed joke is fair game, puns are encouraged.
      • A variety of animal art licensed for reuse has been collected for this lesson. It's suggested you browse these images to get an idea of what characters you might want to include.
      • If you want to use an animal not included in the above link, Mr. Smith might be able to find it for you.
    4. Here's the an example of a script for this project:
      • Fox: Hey, want to hear a joke?
        Crab: No! I don't like your jokes! They're always puns! I hate puns!
        Fox: Wow, that's a little mean. Why do you always have to be so ...
        Crab: Don't say it….
        Fox: … Crabby?
        Crab: Aaaaauuuuuuuuugh!
    5. Proofread your sentences and find the Video 1 assignment in Canvas to hand in a photo of your script. Make sure that what you've written can be seen clearly in the photo. (A blurry image cannot earn credit. If it can't be read, it can't be graded!)

  2. Video 2: Animation Storyboard

    1. Objective: Students will create a "punny" storyboard based on their script to prepare for their animation project.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Storyboard dialogue has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors and is in the boxes BELOW the drawings.
      • 3 Pts Storyboard has one animal tell an animal themed joke to another animal, and includes the other animal's reaction.
      • 3 Pts Storyboard includes a title panel, credits panel, and slight differences in characters and camera angles to emphasize that they are two characters intended to be played by the same person.
    3. Today, Mr. Smith is going to show you how to make a paper storyboard. There are lots of templates that can be used (we've even used Google Slides), but the simplest solution is to just fold a sheet of paper a few times.

      • Add a title panel that includes the name of your movie IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS! (Movie titles are almost always in all caps.)
      • Note in the animated gif above that Mr. Smith is drawing stick figures. This is fine (and expected), so long as their position in frame is correct.
      • You will probably want to reference the provided character and background art. Check the links over on the right.
      • Remember that we didn't always see the whole character in some shots of Mr. Smith's example video. When will you crop your own characters? Draw them accordingly.
      • We SHOULD see if they're on the left or right side of the screen and which way they're facing.
      • Add a credits panel that includes YOUR NAME and the sentence "ART IS USED WITH PERMISSION FROM OPENCLIPART.ORG." (Usually more of a citation is needed, but all of the art we're using is public domain.)
    4. Proofread your sentences (Yes, you're copying them onto the storyboard) and find the Video 2 assignment in Canvas to hand in a photo of your script. Make sure that what you've written can be seen clearly in the photo. (A blurry image cannot earn credit. If it can't be read, it can't be graded!)

  3. Video 3: Voice Acting

    1. Objective: Students will record audio based on their storyboards to prepare for their animation project.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Observations have very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 6 Pts Observations share something the student noticed while recording.
    3. Use WeVideo to record and export the lines spoken by both of your animal characters, based on your storyboard and script.
      • These directions assume you completed the Audio unit, so we will not go into detail about how to record audio again.
      • You should use a different character voice for each animal so your audience can easily tell them apart!
      • Students in class may use a different tool to record their audio depending on what equipment is set up. WeVideo is the recommended tool for use outside of the classroom, due to the number of provided video tutorials.
    4. Listen to your recording!
      • What went well?
      • What could you do better?
      • Make a second recording, then compare the two.
      • Keep the better recording and delete the other one.
    5. Find the Video 3 assignment in Canvas to share something you noticed when recording today. Proofread your sentences and press the button to hand them in. (Audio will not be handed in today. The rubric is grading a single sentence.)

  4. Video 4: Animation Edit (Part 1 of 2)

    1. Objective: Students will begin their animations to better understand the benefits of key frames and duplication in video editing.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Observations have very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 6 Pts Observations share something the student noticed while recording.
    3. Today, we are going to continue using WeVideo.
    4. You will need the following things:
    5. Listen to your recording!
      • (Note: Some classes will record their audio in different ways. If Mr. Smith managed the files, he will provide a download link. This will not be necessary if the scripts were recorded in WeVideo.)
      • Make sure when Lesson 3 wrapped up, your recording was set up in a way where you would be happy with it.
    6. Download your two (2) chosen animals and one (1) chosen background from the links to the right.
    7. Import these three (3) images into WeVideo. Along with your recording from Video Lesson 3, if it's not already there. This is all you will need today.
    8. Follow Mr. Smith's directions for moving the characters into position, then cutting and/or copying the image clip to create the illusion of movement.
      • If you're stuck, don't forget the tutorials over on the right.
      • Ideally the cuts should happen AT LEAST after each sentence, but in Mr. Smith's example they were moved slightly more often to set a particular tone.
    9. Move the clips so they're in the right order!
    10. Delete any fragments or flubs that don't belong in your finished video! (A common mistake is to have a short snippet of something 30 seconds or more down the timeline. This and all of the blank space in between will also be exported if you don't catch it!)
    11. Find the Video 4 assignment in Canvas to share something you noticed when editing today. Proofread your sentences and press the button to hand them in. (Video will not be handed in today. The rubric is grading a single sentence.)

  5. Video 5: Animation Edit (Part 2 of 2)

    1. Objective: Students will complete their animations to better understand the benefits of key frames and duplication in video editing.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Video is easy to see and audio is easy to hear.
      • 3 Pts Video has one animal tell an animal themed joke to another animal, and includes the other animal's reaction.
      • 3 Pts Video has a title and credits that cite YOU and your art source. ("IMAGES FROM OPENCLIPART.ORG, USED WITH PERMISSION.")
    3. Today, we are going to wrap up using WeVideo.
    4. You should have already added your voice acting and images to your project in WeVideo. If you have not, the instructions are in Video 4's instructions. If you need to re-record your audio, we've already done three lessons on how to do that in WeVideo.
    5. Today we're doing 4 things:
      1. Adding movement
      2. Adding text (Title & Credits)
      3. Exporting our videos
      4. Uploading our videos to the Video 5 assignment

  6. Video 6: Exit Ticket

    1. Objective: Students will reflect on what they learned and what they liked to further reinforce the content covered.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Exit Ticket has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 3 Pts Exit ticket shares something you learned during the video unit.
      • 3 Pts Exit ticket shares something you enjoyed during the video unit.
    3. Look at the rubric so you know what is expected.
    4. Look for the Video 6 assignment in Canvas to complete the rubric requirements.
    5. Once you've done this, you'll have two options:
      1. Check with Mr. Smith to see what you may resubmit (or hand in for the first time), then work on that!
      2. If you're all caught up, Mr. Smith will have another activity for you to complete in class as a reward.
