Lessons

  1. Audio 1: How-To

    1. Objective: Students will script an audio project to see how Media Arts can relate to things outside of the computer lab.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Script has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 3 Pts Script is designed for an audio only format.
      • 3 Pts Instructions explain how to complete an interesting task.
    3. To begin, we need a task that we already know how to do. Possible task hooks include:
      • How to warm up before a sports activity.
      • How to log into an online tool used for school.
      • How to organize your room the way you like.
      • How to record video with your phone.
    4. You aren't limited to just these 4 hooks, but consider them if you're having trouble thinking of a starting point.
    5. Goals should NOT be:
      • Getting good grades. (That might be a side effect of achieving a goal, but for this assignment it should not be the main task.)
    6. Next, we'll need to plan the steps for your instructions.
      1. We're writing these on paper. Typing is nice, but paper's more portable.
      2. Your audience is only going to hear you reading the instructions, NOT see you doing the task, so you need to verbally explain each step thoroughly enough for your audience to know what you mean.
      3. If any step starts to take up more than one line, consider splitting it into two steps.
      4. Proofread your sentences! Write like your Language Arts teacher is reading them.
      5. (You do not have to use this template, but it may help you.)

      6. Proofread your sentences and find the Audio 1 assignment in Canvas to hand in a photo of your script. Make sure that what you've written can be seen clearly in the photo. (A blurry image cannot earn credit. If it can't be read, it can't be graded!)

  2. Audio 2: Record & Edit

    1. Objective: Students will record their prepared scripts to review the steps required to record and edit audio.
    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Recording is free of misspoken words and "verbal filler" like "um," "uh," and so on.
      • 3 Pts Recording is saved in an .mp3 audio format.
      • 3 Pts Instructions explain how to complete an interesting task.
    3. Keep the following things in mind as you record your script from Lesson 1.
      • Be mindful of your classmates. There are many of you in this room who will be recording at the same time.
      • Have your script ready to go before you record! Read through it a few times first to make sure you've practiced it.
      • There are many good editing programs for audio, but we'll be using WeVideo for this.
      • There is a link in Canvas that will have to be used once to activate your WeVideo "Pro" account. This should only need to be done once a year, but failing to do so WILL cause problems.
    4. Once you've logged into WeVideo with your PGCPS Google Account and set up your "Pro" subscription, use the "Podcast" option to record your script.
      • See the video tutorials to the right if you're stuck, they're there to help.
      • REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE EXPORTING AUDIO ONLY! This will not be a video project.
      • If you did not select the podcast/mp3/audio option for exporting, Canvas will NOT allow you to upload your finished recording.
    5. With your audio exported, go to Canvas to upload your file to the Audio 2 Assignment. IT WILL ONLY UPLOAD IF YOU FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS AND CREATED AN MP3 AUDIO FILE.

  3. Audio 3: Three Sound Story Script

    1. Note: This is lesson starts a new project. Students should not use any script or recordings from Audio 1 or 2 if they wish to score well on Audio 4 or Audio 5.
    2. Objective: Students will create scripts to show how sound effects can be used to reinforce storytelling.
    3. Grading Rubric:

Grading Rubric: 4 Pts Script has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread! 3 Pts Story is 3 sentences long. 3 Pts Story has a beginning, middle, and end. To begin, we need a story. Sometimes it's hard to come up with a new story from nothing, so here's some "story hooks" that might help. What did you do during vacation? A comet is heading towards Earth! What does the superhero do to stop it? The athlete works to win a sporting event! The student works to bring up a low grade! You aren't limited to just these 4 hooks, but consider them if you're having trouble thinking of a starting point. Next, we'll need to plan the beginning, middle and end of your story. To make this more challenging, you will need to write your story with only 3 sentences. With only 3 sentences to tell the whole story, you'll have to be very concise with your details. We're writing these on paper. Typing is nice, but paper's more portable. The first sentence should be the beginning of the story. Does it mention the main character? Does it mention the event taking place? It should do at least one or the other. The last sentence (Yes, we're skipping to the end.) should reveal how everything works out. How did the athlete win? How did the superhero stop the comet? The middle sentence should be your bridge from the first sentence to the last. What happened in-between those events? (You do not have to use this template, but it may help you.) SAMPLE SCRIPTS: Hello, my name is ____, and this summer I went to ___. While I was there, I ___. When I returned home, I ___. Once, in the land of ____, there was a horrible ___. Fortunately, a ___ decided to do something. After ___, everyone was much happier. Stories often have more than one sound to help build the scene. Which of these sounds could be used together? Today, I would like you to write a short story that could use three of these six sounds. We're writing these on paper. Typing is nice, but paper's more portable. This can be a 3 sentence story if you want, but the rubric doesn't count sentences, just sounds. We're not editing audio today, don't worry about how to add files to a recording. When you are writing your story, include the sound effect between brackets [like this]. SAMPLE SCRIPT: I was driving to work in my car. [Car Engine] I had to stop because some birds were sitting in the middle of the street! [Geese Honking] They honked at me, so I honked back. [Car Horn] A very common mistake is that students will pick sounds that aren't on the list in the rubric. If you don't use the sounds provided, you won't earn credit! Find the Audio 3 assignment in Canvas to hand in a photo of your script. Make sure that what you've written can be seen clearly in the photo. (A blurry image cannot earn credit. If it can't be read, it can't be graded!) Audio 4: Three Sound Story Recording Objective: Students will record and edit their Audio 3 scripts to learn how sound effects can enhance a story. Grading Rubric: 4 Pts Recording is free of misspoken words and "verbal filler" like "um," "uh," and so on. 3 Pts Story uses 3 of the 6 sound effects from this list: [Car Horn], [Geese Honking], [Creaky Door], [Walking], [Rain & Thunder], & [Car Engine] 3 Pts Story and sound effects fit together well. To begin, you will first need to make sure you handed in your Audio 3 assignment. Without your script you will not have anything to record! Your script needed to have at least 3 sound effects. Use the links in the rubric above to download them to your computer. (Right-click or 2-finger-click on the link and select "Save Link") Go to WeVideo. You should have set up your account during our Audio 2 lesson. The recording steps will be the same as the Audio 2 lesson, but we will also be uploading the sound effects you selected using the "Add Media" button. Again, the tutorials to the right will be useful if you're stuck! It's important to not have your sound effects be too loud compared to your recording. Mr. Smith will show you how to adjust the volume to fix this. With your recording done and sound effects in place, use the Export button on the top right and make sure you are exporting MP3 audio. With your audio exported, go to Canvas to upload your file to the Audio 4 Assignment. IT WILL ONLY UPLOAD IF YOU FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS AND CREATED AN MP3 AUDIO FILE. Audio 5: Exit Ticket Objective: Students will reflect on what they learned and what they liked to further reinforce the content covered. Grading Rubric: 4 Pts Exit Ticket has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread! 3 Pts Exit ticket shares something you learned during the audio unit. 3 Pts Exit ticket shares something you enjoyed during the audio unit. Look at the rubric so you know what is expected. Look for the Audio 5 assignment in Canvas to complete the rubric requirements. Once you've done this, you'll have two options: Check with Mr. Smith to see what you may resubmit (or hand in for the first time), then work on that! If you're all caught up, you may play video games until dismissal! (The Luanti server may be up and running to facilitate this.) n to each of the six (6) sounds.

    1. Objective: Students will record and edit their most recent script to think about how sound effects can enhance a story.
    2. Grading Rubric:

      • 3 Pts Story uses 3 of the 6 sound effects from this list: [Meow], [rim shot], [Applause], [Audience Laughing], [Metal Crash], & [Dog Bark]
      • 3 Pts Story and sound effects fit together well.
    3. To begin, you will first need to make sure you handed in your Audio 3 assignment. Without your script you will not have anything to record!
    4. Your script needed to have at least 3 sound effects. Use the links in the rubric above to download them to your computer. (Right-click or 2-finger-click on the link and select "Save Link")
    5. Go to WeVideo. You should have set up your account during our Audio 2 lesson.
