3rd Grade Unit - Video

This project may be completed by the following students:

g3 3rd Grade Elementary Media Arts Students.

Lessons

  1. Video 1: Magic Trick Script

    1. Objective: Students will script a magic trick to prepare for a video editing lesson.

    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Story has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 3 Pts Story has the magician complete a single "trick" where an object appears, disappears, or turns into another object.
      • 3 Pts Story is appropriate for school.

    3. Today, Mr. Smith is going to show you how a "jump cut" can be used to edit video and add a special effect.
    4. Remember, WE ARE ONLY WRITING THE SCRIPT TODAY! This demonstration of the process is not a full how-to for the editing. Mr. Smith will show that in a future class.
    5. Think about what you could make appear, disappear, or change using this technique.
    6. As with the Audio unit, we'll be writing our scripts on paper.
      • This paper handout will be used in class for our script writing.
      • Write a short script where you are a magician performing that magic trick.
      • Remember, we'll be recording these in the classroom. If you decide to use a prop that we don't have, you'll have to change your script.
    7. Proofread your sentences and find the Video 1 assignment in Canvas to hand in a photo of your script. Make sure that what you've written can be seen clearly in the photo. (A blurry image cannot earn credit. If it can't be read, it can't be graded!)
  2. Video 2: Magic Trick Storyboard

    1. Objective: Students will storyboard a magic trick to prepare for a video editing lesson.

    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Storyboard dialogue has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors and is in the boxes BELOW the drawings.
      • 3 Pts Storyboard has the magician complete a single "trick" where an object appears, disappears, or turns into another object.
      • 3 Pts Storyboard has the same setting and actor in each panel.

    3. Today, Mr. Smith is going to show you how to make a paper storyboard. There are lots of templates that can be used (we've even used Google Slides), but the simplest solution is to just fold a sheet of paper a few times.
Animated gif of paper being folded to make a storyboard
      • Add a title panel that includes the name of your movie IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS! (Movie titles are almost always in all caps.)
      • Note in the animated gif above that Mr. Smith is drawing stick figures. This is fine (and expected), so long as their position in frame is correct.
      • If we aren't going to record your characters yelling from down the hall, we likely won't see them from the waist down.
      • We SHOULD see if they're on the left or right side of the screen and which way they're facing.
      • Add a credits slide that includes YOUR NAME. (You'll alo want to credit your camera operator, but you won't know who that is until later.)
    4. Proofread your sentences (Yes, you're copying them onto the storybaord) and find the Video 2 assignment in Canvas to hand in a photo of your script. Make sure that what you've written can be seen clearly in the photo. (A blurry image cannot earn credit. If it can't be read, it can't be graded!)
  3. Video 3: Magic Trick Record

    1. Objective: Students will record videos based on their storyboards to understand the techniques behind "movie magic."

    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Observations have very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 6 Pts Observations share something the student noticed while recording.

    3. Today, Mr. Smith is going to have you taking turns to record what you planned in your storyboard.
    4. Use the actions you planned out in your storyboard as your guide! (Otherwise, why make a storyboard?)
    5. Watch your recording!
      • What went well?
      • What could you do better?
      • Make a second recording, then compare the two.
      • Keep the better recording and delete the other one.
    6. Find the Video 3 assignment in Canvas to share something you noticed when recording today. Proofread your sentences and press the button to hand them in. (Video will not be handed in today. The rubric is grading a single sentence.)
  4. Video 4: Magic Trick Edit (1 of 2)

    1. Objective: Students will begin editing videos based on their storyboards to understand the techniques behind "movie magic."

    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Observations have very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 6 Pts Observations share something the student noticed while recording.

    3. Today, we are going to continue using WeVideo.
    4. You will need the following things:
      • Your storyboard from Video 2
      • Your recording(s) from Video 3. (Note, if these were recorded as group work in class Mr. Smith will share the recordings with you. If you recorded them in WeVideo you should have them there.)
    5. Follow Mr. Smith's directions for moving the playhead to where you want to make cuts.
      • Don't forget the WeVideo tutorials over on the right!
    6. Delete the part(s) where you were getting things into position!
    7. Move the clips so there's no empty space in-between!
    8. Delete any fragments or flubs that don't belong in your finished video!
    9. Watch your edit so far!
      • Are you happy with it?
      • Is there anything you'd like to change?
    10. (We will add a title and credits before exporting and handing in the video next class.)
    11. Delete any fragments or flubs that don't belong in your finished video! (A common mistake is to have a short snippet of something 30 seconds or more down the timeline. This and all of the blank space in between will also be exported if you don't catch it!)
    12. Find the Video 4 assignment in Canvas to share something you noticed when editing today. Proofread your sentences and press the button to hand them in. (Video will not be handed in today. The rubric is grading a single sentence.)
  5. Video 5: Magic Trick Edit (2 of 2)

    1. Objective: Students will finish editing videos based on their storyboards to understand the techniques behind "movie magic."

    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Video is easy to see and audio is easy to hear.
      • 3 Pts Video uses an edit to create a magic trick.
      • 3 Pts Video has a title and credits.

    3. Today, we are going to wrap up using WeVideo.
    4. You will need to find the video project in WeVideo that you made during our last class. If you need to re-record your video, look to the tutorials over on the right to get that done.
    5. Today we're doing 3 things:
      1. Adding text (Title & Credits)
      2. (Even if you're the only person who worked on it, YOUR NAME should be in the credits!)
      3. Exporting our videos
      4. Uploading our videos to the Video 5 assignment
  6. Video 6: Exit Ticket

    1. Objective: Students will reflect on what they learned and what they liked to further reinforce the content covered.

    2. Grading Rubric:
      • 4 Pts Exit Ticket has very few spelling and/or grammatical errors. Proofread!
      • 3 Pts Exit ticket shares something you learned during the video unit.
      • 3 Pts Exit ticket shares something you enjoyed during the video unit.

    3. Look at the rubric so you know what is expected.
    4. Look for the Video 6 assignment in Canvas to complete the rubric requirements.
    5. Once you've done this, you'll have two options:
      1. Check with Mr. Smith to see what you may resubmit (or hand in for the first time), then work on that!
      2. If you're all caught up, you may play video games until dismissal! (The Luanti server may be up and running to facilitate this.)
