Kindergarten 1st Grade 2nd Grade

Primary Unit - Photography

This project may be completed by the following students:

g0 Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd Grade Elementary Media Arts Students.

Lessons

  1. Photography 1: Photo Walk

    1. Objective: Students will create a series of photos as they explore spaces throughout the school.
    2. Note: This lesson may be repeated, with different paths through and/or around the school (weather permitting). Repetition and practice lead to improvement.

    3. Grading Rubric:
      • 3 Pts Student has taken a minimum of 10 photos during the photo walk.
      • 1 Pt Photos do not include people.
      • 1 Pt Photos do not include art made by others.

    4. Today, Mr. Smith is going to lead students on a photo walk.
    5. The cameras in the lab are not identical. Mr. Smith will provide specific instruction on how to use the one assigned to each student.
      1. All cameras will have a shutter button and will often make a click sound when a photo is saved.
      2. Most cameras will focus on a subject when the shutter is pressed halfway down. This does not take a picture. If the screen did not briefly go dark before showing a still image for a second or two, no photo was taken.
        • Every year a student will have the camera focus on a thing dozens of times but never take the a single photo because they didn't push the shutter all of the way down.
    6. Today's lesson is not about photographing people. People tend to pose when they know they are being photographed. There IS an art to that, but we're not working on that today.
    7. The photos for today are meant to be art. Taking a photo of someone else's art, no matter how cool the art is, that doesn't make it new art. Students should look for new, interesting compositions.
    8. To make sure Mr. Smith knows who took which photo, students will have both their first and last photos be of the hexagon numbers at their assigned seats.
  2. Photography 2: Photo Walk Critiques

    1. Objective: Students will assess the photos of their peers using their personal aesthetic values.
    2. Note: This lesson may be repeated after each photo session. Reflection after art creation maximizes the learning.

    3. Grading Rubric:
      • 3 Pts Student participated in the critique process.
      • 1 Pt Student recognized the difference between positive, negative, and constructive criticism.
      • 1 Pt Student was able to provide positive and constructive feedback, possibly with assistance.

    4. Today, Mr. Smith is going to lead you through the critique process.
    5. Before we begin, it's important to understand the three types of criticism:
      • Positive Criticism: Sharing what you like about something. (Be specific! "Good job!" doesn't share WHAT you like about a photo.)
      • Constructive Criticism: Sharing how a something could be improved. (Again, be specific! Saying "Make it better" doesn't tell someone HOW to make it better.)
      • Negative Criticism: Sharing what you don't like about something. (Avoid this. We're all learning, and being negative doesn't help as much as you might think it does.)
    6. The photos from Lesson 1 will be shared with students on the board. We might not get to everyone's photos, but we WILL try.
    7. Students will be asked to look at the thumbnail images of the photos and select one to be viewed in a larger format.
    8. Students will then be asked to share what they like about the photo.
    9. "Wonderings" for how other, similar photos might be taken that also look interesting will be encouraged.
  3. Photography 3: Photo Presentation

    1. Objective: Students will create presentations to showcase their favorite photos.
    2. Note: This lesson may be repeated after each critique session. More practice with typing and writing sentences makes us better at typing and writing sentences.

    3. Grading Rubric:
      • 3 Pts Presentation includes a photo taken by the student.
      • 1 Pt Presentation includes the student's name.
      • 1 Pt Presentation includes a sentence about the photo.

    4. Today students will be selecting their favorite photos so far and creating a presentation to share them.
    5. Mr. Smith will guide students towards selecting a photo from a previous lesson and adding it to a document.
    6. The student will then add their name and a sentence about the photo.
      • It is understood that not all students are writing at the same level, but this lesson is being taught late enough in the year for all students to have at least practiced sentence writing, and we have been practicing typing in this class, as well.
      • Even if the student has not managed to type a sentence, we will have an accurate account of their skill so far.
    7. Mr. Smith will help students save their documents so that he can display them later.
